The Building and Housing Research Center, affiliated to the Ministry of Housing & Urban Development, is a national center for research and assessment of products and systems in the building and housing fields in Iran. Its principal objectives are study, coordination, centralization, and performance of research projects on building and housing systems, materials and constructional technologies, and the effects of climatic and environmental conditions.
BHRC has around 200 employees including 100 engineers and research scientists. Its annual budget in 1999 is about 7560 million Rls.; (2600 million Rls. for research, 2000 million Rls. for investment, 560 million Rls. for disseminating knowledge 1600 million Rls. for administration and 800 million Rls. for education and training).

Applied research is the major activity of BHRC in various fields of building and housing requirements. Some of the most important points in this respect are: evaluating physical and mechanical properties of building and housing materials, discovering new building materials, progressing the constructional technology of building and housing systems, assuring safety of structures subjected to dynamic and static loads, especially, loads induced by earthquake. The other related research area is considering traditional texture of urban and rural old residential areas for designing new residential areas.
Advanced laboratory equipment's and instruments are available in seven research departments. Advanced computing systems are also other facilities at BHRC.
The main educational activities of BHRC comprise of;
Controland assessment of the quality of building materials are the main functions of BHRC. These objectives are carried out at relevant departments. Establishing "Fire-Research Laboratory" for protection against fire is one of the most innovative activities in recent years. It has been built in the "Building Materials and Products Department" of BHRC.
Compiling various regulations such as codes of practice, standards and design criteria under the supervision of the Standard and Industrial Research Institute of Iran. Providing related standards on building materials and tests for quality control, preparing and offering standards to the concerned authorities for approval, and certification of technical approvements in the fields of building products and systems are the main objectives in this regard.
The up-to-date results of researches, laboratory experiments, and investigations on building and housing subjects are published in the forms of books, research reports, and technical magazines. These publications provide high technical supports for regulations. Also, many of non-Iranian subjects are found in the BHRC Library. The social sciences, future technological and social developments and economics have also been considered. In the fields of data processing, advanced use of computers, technical data processing systems, documentary engineering, and data modeling are prepared and distributed in the country.
BHRC cooperates with various research and educational centers, universities, industry-owners, etc in the specified frameworks.

As the stability and durability of structures mostly rely on mechanical, chemical as well as physical properties, and specifications of materials used in buildings, this department has the general function of research on various building materials and products.
The main objective of this department is research and investigation on the improvement of the quality of plain and reinforced concrete. Its other important activities are as follows: research on the durability characteristics of common structures with respect to the deterioration causes, evaluation of the strength of the existing structures, evaluation of the repair requirements, and the selection and implementation of repairing techniques.
This department is active in executing research projects, compiling regulations and defining basis for seismological engineering studies and its related fields. Some of the most important activities fulfilled in this department are as follows: Study and research for the compilation of Iranian seismic codes of practices. Qualitative and quantitative improvement and the monitoring of accelerograph's network of the country. Preparation and collection of earthquake response spectra of strong motion records. Investigation of engineering reports on destructive earthquakes occurring in Iran. Installing the seismograms in various regions of the country, and compiling seismic hazard zone map for the country.
These two departments have major roles in executing research projects on housing architecture, building and housing systems, acoustics, and solar energy systems. Some of the most important aspects are as follows:
This department deals with research on the behaviour of structural components under static and dynamic loads, particularly loads induced by earthquake. Other related areas are numerical methods of analysis, composite structures, concrete, steel, and masonry structures, and the application of emergent computing methods to the structural engineering problems.
In this department, the following activities are fulfilled:
The Department of Fire Protection of Buildings was established for which active research could be carried out on the protection of buildings against fire. At the first stage, a comprehensive program me for the setting up of a "Fire-Research Laboratory" was provided. Number of research projects has been started in which the basic thermal properties and some non-standard full-scale tests have been applied.
