Transportation Networks and Port Facilities
The total length of Irans land transportation networks including highways, freeways and
main roads was about 107,000 km in 1995. After the revolution, on average, 2400 km of
roads have been built annually. Over 107 million tones of freight and 580 million
passengers were transported via the nations road networks in 1995. There were 45
major airports in Iran in 1995, 18 of which could handle transcontinental carriers.
Passengers transported by Irans air network in that year numbered about 17
million. There are 10 large commercial ports in Iran, with a combined cargo-handling
capacity of 30 million tones. They are equipped with 26 loading and unloading docks, with
a total length of nearly 17000 meters.
Iran has also achieved great progress in other segments of the construction industry.
Production of basic construction materials and products such as aggregate, paving
material, cement, iron beam, artificial granite, building stone, dry wall, fittings and
fixtures have in many cases multiplied. Also, a large number of factories have been built
in various parts of Iran which manufacture a wide range of reasonably-priced construction
machinery and plants, including earthmoving and paving equipment , truck mixers, material
handlers, dumpers, crushing and batching plants, and well designed concrete formwork
systems. For instance, the equivalent of a 300 hp, D8, Caterpillar bulldozer, which costs
as much as 300,000 dollars on international markets, can be purchased in Iran for
Rls.70,000,000 or about 90,000 dollars at the open-market exchange rate.
